Terms of Service
Last updated: September 29, 2026
These terms cover novelstarter.com and NovelStarter Writer Web at app.novelstarter.com (together, "NovelStarter"). NovelStarter is an independent business run by a sole proprietor ("NovelStarter", "we", "us"). Contact: contact@novelstarter.com.
By creating an account or buying from us you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use NovelStarter.
1. Who sells what
- Writer Web subscriptions and Extra AI are sold through our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle is the Merchant of Record for these orders: it processes the payment, issues the invoice or receipt, handles sales tax and VAT, and handles billing questions and refunds together with us. Paddle's Buyer Terms also apply to those purchases.
- Outlines and worlds in our catalogue are sold through Payhip, which is the seller for those orders. Each piece comes with the licence described on its page.
2. Writer Web
Writer Web is an online tool for developing a novel from an outline: chapters and beats, characters, story facts, what-if branches, and AI features that let you talk to your characters, rehearse scenes, get suggestions and an AI reading of your story.
- Free plan. Everything that works without AI, at no cost.
- Subscription. US$20 per month (plus tax where applicable), billed in advance each month until you cancel. It includes AI with a monthly allowance. The share of this month's allowance you have used is shown in the app as a percentage. The allowance renews with each billing period; unused AI does not carry over and has no cash value.
- Extra AI. Subscribers can buy Extra AI for US$10, which doubles the AI allowance of the current billing period. It expires at the end of that period.
- Cancelling. You can cancel at any time from Settings → AI → Manage subscription. You keep AI until the end of the period you paid for; after that your account continues on the free plan and your stories stay in it.
- Prices may change. We will tell you by email at least 30 days before a new price applies to your subscription, and you can cancel before it does.
- Refunds are covered by our Refund Policy.
We may improve, change or retire features. If we ever close Writer Web, we will give you at least 60 days' notice and a way to download your projects.
3. Your account
You need an account with a valid email address. Keep your password to yourself: you are responsible for what happens in your account. Tell us at once if you think someone else has used it. You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to buy a subscription.
4. Your stories are yours
Everything you write or import into NovelStarter, and everything the AI features produce for you in your projects, belongs to you. We claim no ownership of it. You give us only the permission we need to run the service for you: to store your projects, show them to you, back them up, and send the parts an AI feature needs to the AI provider that answers it. We do not publish your work, and we do not use it to train AI models.
You are responsible for having the rights to what you upload. Outlines bought from our catalogue come with their own licence; importing them into Writer does not change it.
5. AI features
AI answers are generated by third-party AI models and can be wrong, inconsistent or unsuitable. They are creative suggestions for your writing, not facts or advice. Writer marks AI material as such in your project, and nothing an AI proposes becomes part of your story unless you accept it.
Each AI request sends only the context that task needs (for example, one character's knowledge at a point in the story and the conversation so far; a Story Audit reads the whole working story). See our Privacy Policy for who processes it.
6. Acceptable use
Don't use NovelStarter to break the law or anyone's rights; to create sexual content involving minors; to harass, threaten or defame real people; to try to get around the AI allowance, limits or security; to access another person's account or data; to use Writer Web as a general-purpose AI service or resell access to it; or to overload, scrape or reverse-engineer the service. We may suspend or close an account that does, and we will tell you why unless the law prevents us.
7. Availability and backups
We work to keep Writer Web available and your projects safe, including regular backups, but we can't promise the service will always be available or error-free. Download a copy of your projects from time to time (Project overview → Download project backup).
8. Ending your account
You can ask us to delete your account at any time by writing to contact@novelstarter.com from your account email. We delete your account and projects within 30 days; copies in backups are removed as the backups expire, within a further 30 days. Cancel any subscription first so you are not billed again.
9. Liability
NovelStarter is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost profits or lost data, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For material changes we will email account holders at least 30 days in advance. Continuing to use NovelStarter after a change takes effect means you accept it.
11. Disputes
If something goes wrong, write to us first at contact@novelstarter.com and we'll try to resolve it. Purchases of Writer Web and Extra AI are also governed by Paddle's Buyer Terms, and catalogue purchases by Payhip's terms. Nothing in these terms takes away the rights you have under the consumer laws of the country where you live.
